Mt Penglai is an Eden like place in Chinese mythology. As the myth traveled to Japan it became the fantasy island, Mount Hōrai. Said to be a place of no pain and suffering, no winter, abundant nourishment and healing, in art it is often stylized as a gathering of cranes or tortoises in a bright landscape dominated by pine, plum, and bamboo. The eight immortal gods are said to gather here for feasting. This prewar scroll includes the cranes and the pines plus a waterfall - another revered part of the landscape in Japanese art.
